From Outside In ….. To Inside Out

The view of Lake Glenville from the hot tub is beautiful. The path winding down toward the lake, the plants lining the walkway, the trees, the shifting sky through the leaves—all of it carries a quiet sense of peace. Simply being here brings an awareness of beauty.

What I noticed today, though, was something more interesting than the scenery itself.

For many years, a sweeping mountain vista, a lake, or a dramatic landscape seemed almost necessary to trigger an inner shift. The external beauty acted like a key that unlocked an internal flow state. I would see the panorama, relax, let go, and for a while the mind would become spacious and quiet.

Today it felt different.

The lake is still beautiful. The view still invites stillness. But I realized that the view is no longer doing the work. The sense of peace seems to arise on its own. It doesn’t need to be initiated by an impressive landscape. The external beauty has become more of a companion than a catalyst.

As I was sitting with that realization, my grandchildren were playing in the hot tub. Without any toys or organized activity, they simply invented their own game. They didn’t need something from outside to entertain them; the play emerged from within their own imaginations. It felt like a gentle reflection of what I was noticing in myself. Just as they no longer needed someone else to provide the game, I no longer needed the landscape to provide the peace.

That’s a subtle but important change.

It’s as if the mind has learned the pathway. What once required an external invitation has become an internal capacity. The flow state is available first, and the scenery simply reflects it back.

Perhaps this is one sign of practice maturing. At first we borrow beauty from the world. Eventually we discover that the world is reminding us of something that was already present. The mountains, the lake, and the trees haven’t lost their magic. They’ve simply stopped being a requirement.

The real view is no longer outside. The real landscape is the one that opens within.
