The Wave Beneath Experience

If qigong is meditation in motion, then Sketchfulness is mindfulness in motion.

Begin with contact.

A sound.

Wave visibly flowing through subtle body outline

A touch.

A color.

A breath.

Something meets the senses, and before we have words for it, something moves.

Feeling.

Sensation.

Liking.

Not liking.

Attraction.

Resistance.

Then, almost imperceptibly, the mind catches the wave.

It recognizes.

It names.

Sound. Warm. Pleasant. Uncomfortable. Mine.

But what was there before the name?

Energy.

Not energy as another thing added to the experience.

The energy was there all along.

Contact becomes sensation.
Sensation becomes feeling.
Feeling becomes perception.
Perception becomes recognition.

One movement.

One wave.

Like the ocean, continually changing shape without ever becoming anything other than the ocean.

This is the place where qigong becomes interesting.

Before I call it earth, water, fire, or air, I may feel something moving.

Grounding.

Flow.

Heat.

Expansion.

Contraction.

Space.

The four elements give the unnamed a language:

Earth grounds.
Water flows.
Fire transforms.
Air moves.

Qigong is a way of becoming sensitive to that movement—to where it gathers, where it releases, where it becomes blocked, where it flows.

It is like learning to hear a note before naming it.

And Sketchfulness does something similar.

The pencil catches the movement.

The hand moves with the mind.

The mind moves with the feeling.

The feeling moves with the body.

The sketch is not the experience.

It is the trace of the wave.

The pencil can eventually stop.

The qigong movement can eventually stop.

But the wave doesn’t stop.

It continues through the ordinary day—in contact, feeling, sensation, perception, action, connection.

That is why the practices need practice.

A concert pianist still plays scales.

A yogi still returns to the posture.

We return to the pencil.

We return to the qigong form.

Not because the form is the destination, but because it keeps us connected to the movement underneath the form.

Mindfulness recognizes the wave.
Sketchfulness moves with the wave.
Qigong feels the energy of the wave.

And perhaps, underneath every wave, there is only one thing happening:

Being …Moving
