Imagine a candle with a scent of happiness. Imagine that as you are sitting and enjoying the glow of the flame you also are delighted to breathe in the aroma of happiness. What might that feel like? Can you imagine happiness right now without anything seeming to be its cause other than your wanting it to be?
The seed of happiness along with the seeds of all the other possible human emotions resides continually inside of you. These seeds can be cultivated and blossom at any time. Often when something we want occurs and we experience happiness we assume we are happy due to this particular outside

condition having been met. This process is reinforced many times and we forget that we started out as children bring happy. We were happy until something outside covered up that happiness. Now having grown we forget that our central core is happiness. We routinely think “I will be happy when ….” you can fill in your own blank.
Your breath can become the oxygen that the candle, scented with happiness, needs to burn. If you place attention on your breath each time your thoughts drift away and have become distracted from the direct experience of what you are doing you will return to your core of happiness.
Your mind can only hold one thought at a time. Thinking the thought breathing in the scent of happiness blocks for a moment any other thought. Then soften the small muscles around your eyes and flow into the natural happiness which is always there.
