Okay this is about the stems of strawberries, apples and peaches. If you go to a farm or an orchard to pick strawberries, apples or peaches you will notice the taste, the sweetness the aliveness of the fruit is significantly different if you eat it right there as you pick it. If you take it home or wait just five minutes you will notice the difference.
You might even try biting into it while it is still connected to the tree or blueberry bush. The stem, the aliveness the actual connection to the living tree, the living bush is part of the reason of why it is so different in the experience of eating it. It is still alive.
The life of the tree, the life of the bush is still there. You are biting into life. The essence of the inside sap of that peach tree comes through the trunk, through the branches, through the stem into the fruit and into your mouth. You are biting directly into the life of the tree, the life flow, the shefa, the prana. And the breath that we breathe in carries that same connection. The mindfulness of the breath is the stem that connects us to life.
So what is the breath what is the mindfulness of the breath and what does that feel like?
When you go to the edge of the ocean or the top of a mountain you see a wondrous sight. You take a spontaneous deep breath in as you expand into the breath. This is not just the breathing in of the breath but the expansion, the prana, the shefa, the oxygen that is coming in through the nostrils and through the lungs. The oxygen, prana, shefa is being absorbed instantly going into the blood stream and instantly upward stimulating the cells, the synapses, the brain, the mind and awareness. So if you expand as the breath comes in, the mindfulness starts with being the sense of breathing but it expands into the awareness of life and happiness. The awareness of life radiates and is felt as happiness. Just as heat radiates from a fire.
The awareness of each of our senses is a connection to life or your true self through mindfulness. So when the eyes are open and light is coming in there is an acknowledgement of what we are looking at along with the essence of seeing. This connection of sense contact coming in through the eyes is similar to the awareness of the breath, oxygen, prana, shefa coming in. So each of the sense windows, when fully opened with mindfulness can connect back to that sense of being alive as a direct contact.
You can think of it as being turned on because you are not being distracted by naming the images that you are seeing or feeling. You are just experiencing the flow through that sense door. When the sense doors are turned on as they are when I go to a retreat it opens up my senses and the sensation or awareness, the flow of energy is felt. It is very present.
When the sense doors are open there is a connection to awareness. Feeling this awareness you can drop liking or not liking as they arise. Some sights, sounds or sensations seem to be more pleasant than others and there is a tendency to be attracted or repulsed by all of the things coming in through the sense doors. Also, there is an inclination to evaluate all the things coming in through the sense doors and look for any imperfections that are there. If we drop all of the imperfections then everything is just as it is. When everything is just as it is, and you are perceiving it in that manner, then the natural sense of happiness radiates from the aliveness that you are.
The expansion of the breath can be used as a meditation to bring yourself to the awareness of dropping the distraction of liking and disliking. With practice this state of mind, body spirit can be used with the other sense doors. In time you can pass through each of the sense doors to the mindfulness of life that is stimulating. When distractions come up as soon as you become aware of the distraction come back to the breath or whatever the object of your meditation is in that moment and gently let go of that distraction.
See beyond the imperfections that tend to pop up and flow into the picture of what is perfect, as it is in this moment, without your evaluation of events. As you are allowing all the sense doors to be open you come back into the natural aliveness that you are and the radiance of happiness.
