One of my favorite places to be is sitting gazing at the flow of wind across the water on Lake Toxaway NC. The friction of the wind pushes against the surface of the water creating small hills and valleys. As the wind ebbs and flows and alters direction the pattern of ripples changes and although invisible you can “see” the wind moving against the background of the lake.
As the air flow circulates across NC and meets the mountains it takes the path of least resistance and rises up or goes around the mountain. The higher altitude has cooler air already there and often as the warmer more humid air rises clouds form and then releases the extra moisture as rain.
As the sun appears to move across the sky and the wind pushes the clouds flowing through the sky the conditions that create the weather keeps changing. Sometimes its sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy or stormy. All the weather is caused by the conditions that develop that are caused by the changing condition before. Everything is conditional on something else.
Would this be true beyond the weather? Are the routine circumstances of my daily life caused and controlled by me or do they develop based on the conditions that flow around me? How much influence, nudging, control, choosing, analyzing, directing or wishing do I have? When conditions are there and the wind blows and specks of dust fly and get in my eye could I have prevented that? Conditions are sunny and I go to the beach. I get sunburnt. I could have used sun block. Weather or a minor accident on the road are the conditions that cause a traffic jam that causes me to be late for an important meeting. Again I could have left earlier, checked the road reports or slept at a Holiday Inn Express closer to the meeting.
Think about it the next time you find yourself pondering the morning news or waiting on line at the supermarket or sitting by the lake watching the wind and hearing it rustling through the trees.
