Thought Experiment: Treading the Moment
Scenario: Imagine you’re standing on the shore of a vast ocean. The water is calm and peaceful, with gentle waves lapping at your feet. You decide to wade in and feel the cool water rise around you. As you walk deeper, you start to tread water. At first, it’s easy; the water supports you, and your movements feel light and effortless. You feel calm, aware of the sun on your face, the sound of the waves, and the sensation of the water against your skin.
Now, imagine a storm suddenly rolling in. The waves grow larger, crashing around you. The water is pulling you in different directions. You can feel the current beneath trying to drag you away from the shore. You’re treading water, but it’s becoming harder to stay afloat. The instinct to panic starts creeping in. Your movements become more frantic as you try to keep your head above water.
Pause and Reflect:
- In this moment, what thoughts are running through your mind? What are you focusing on? Are you thinking about the waves and the storm, or are you noticing your breath and how your body is moving to keep you afloat? What happens if you let go of the panic and focus on simply treading water, one movement at a time?
Now, shift your focus. Imagine that this ocean represents your mind, and the storm represents a stressful situation in your life. The thoughts and emotions are like the waves, sometimes calm and sometimes turbulent.
Experiment:
Picture yourself treading water in the middle of this stormy ocean. Instead of fighting the waves, you decide to tread the moment. You take a deep breath, slow your movements, and focus on the sensation of the water. You notice the rhythm of your breathing and the gentle movements of your hands and feet. You acknowledge the storm, the waves, and the current, but you don’t let them overwhelm you. What changes in your experience when you choose to tread the moment instead of fighting against the waves?
Can you find a sense of calm in the middle of the storm by focusing on the present, one breath, and one movement at a time?
Application:
- Take this practice into your daily life. The next time you feel overwhelmed, visualize yourself treading water in a stormy sea. Remember that you can tread the moment by staying present and aware, no matter how strong the waves around you become.
