Imagine arriving at the beach around dusk. As you cross over the top of a small sand dune your eyes catch the magnificence of color and aura of the setting sun. The first awareness is the actual light touching the retinal walls at the backs of the sense organs of your eyes. CONTACT. SEEING.
Next is your contemplation of sunset along with comparisons and memories of other sunset experiences. THINKING
Going deeper you might close your eyes go inside and “feel” the body’s awareness of the sunset. The sun-sations created and the depth of its experience. FEELING
Just as jelly, jam and marmalade are progressively more complex each moment may become so. Jelly is made from the juice of the fruit. Jam is made from the entire fruit. And marmalade is also from whole fruit uniquely made from bitter oranges.
Too often we stop short and only see things on their surface. We feel pressure to get to something else or rushed to finish something we have started. We think I’ll just add that to my to do list and think about it when I have the time. Or by just “seeing” we have not developed enough interest to look deeper and possibly touch thinking or feeling.
We have arrived in the age of Twitter’s limited key-strokes and Facebook’s one click like button. Even with these short cuts for living we barely have time to express the surface “seeing” of our feelings. No wonder so many of us have difficulty sleeping soundly, forming lasting relationships even with members of our own families, digesting our food properly and consuming too many over the counter and prescription medications.
What do you take with your sunsets? With your toast? Jelly, jam or marmalade? Seeing, thinking or feeling? When you are at the beach and the water is less than warm
what is your plan? Do you see the cold water and not go in? Do you think the water may be too cold and remain on the sand? Do you stick your toe in and feel the water? Do you go in up to your ankles and wait a bit to let the coolness settle in?
Do you become interested enough with each shift to actually go in and become fully immersed and enjoy the water?
Each moment can be enjoyed with your choice of jelly, jam or marmalade. Slow down. Take some time to spread the jelly, jam, marmalade, seeing and thinking so that it becomes filled with feeling. Spread it evenly over the entire surface of your toast right up to the edges. Really look at the shiny surface of the fruit and breathe in its sweet aroma before you bite, before you move on to the next wave of your life. Let Spiritual Gravity pull you in a little closer.
You might not do as many activities but the ones you do will be immensely more fulfilling and like a good meal longer-lasting.
