Choosing Feeling Good

As I stand at the sink, hands submerged in warm, soapy water, I notice something shift. A quiet awareness emerges, like the softest whisper. The universe is unfolding through me, right here, right now, in this simple act of washing the dishes. The moment feels alive, vibrant, as though the entirety of existence is streaming into this ordinary task.

Then the thought comes: How do I want to be unfolding? Instinctively, I want to feel good. Of course, I do. Who wouldn’t? But then I realize—that I that wants to feel good is just another layer of me. It’s a choice, a nudge, like steering a car in the direction I’d prefer. The recognition lands with a sense of clarity, like stepping into a lucid dream of reality.

It’s so simple: I can choose to feel good. All I have to do is want it. The wanting is the key, like turning the ignition. And as I steer myself toward feeling good, I notice how seamlessly it begins to happen. It’s not forced; it’s not contrived. It’s as if the universe aligns itself with that intention, flowing effortlessly through me, filling me with ease and lightness.

I look down at the dishes. The warm water feels pleasant on my skin. The circular motion of scrubbing becomes soothing, almost meditative. The clinking of plates and the bubbles catching the light feel oddly beautiful. I am enjoying this. Not because I have to, but because I choose to.

It strikes me how often this has happened before—moments where I’ve consciously decided to enjoy whatever I’m doing, and the experience transforms. Yoga comes to mind, how I once approached it as a chore until I learned to settle into the stretch, to breathe into the pose, to find joy in the flow. This is no different. The act doesn’t matter; it’s the awareness that brings it to life.

And so, standing here with my hands in the sink, I see it clearly: life is always unfolding through me. I’m always at the center of this lucid dream, always able to steer, to guide my experience. Whether I’m washing dishes, walking outside, or simply sitting quietly, the universe and I are in this together—flowing, choosing, feeling, being. And in this moment, I am steering myself toward joy.
