Who is minding the store? 4-28-2018

Who is minding the store?   Let’s assume for this blog that the store represents whatever it is that is occupying your mind. Whatever you are thinking about, aware of or perceiving is the store. Who is minding or watching the store? What is happening right now? Are you fully aware of the words you are reading or is a portion of your attention somewhere else?

Can you take a step back or behind yourself and imagine watching yourself reading this blog as if you were watching a movie of yourself reading this blog? Divide “you” the watcher of the movie as the subject and what you are watching as the object. You are always there as the subject but most of the time you become so involved in what is happening that “you” as the subject merges into the object. You become lost and lose the sense of perception of yourself and become intertwined with the doing and lose the perception of the being.

Hold that thought

As life and circumstances continually move along the doings (the object) are sometimes enjoyable and sometimes not. If you can step backward and watch from the vantage point of the subject (the perceiver) and momentarily release the emotional grip that the doings have created you then have three choices.

  1. Stay as the perceiver and allow life to flow by however it is.
  2. If a good experience is occurring merge back into it.
  3. If a poor experience is occurring drop the resistance to it and your reaction to it will also drop away.

Imagine you are sitting on a plane and have 90 minutes until you land. Thoughts come and go. Some you like and some you do not like. Many of the thoughts came from the one before and lead on to the next. Often you are not aware of the connecting train-cars of thoughts and find yourself in a mood that seems to have popped up out of nowhere.

Step back notice that you can view this as “you” the subject and the mood as the object. Then choose one of the 3 choices above.
