How much of what we think about is “real” or created by ourselves?
Recently on an afternoon adventure to Barnes & Noble I came across Joseph Heller’s book Catch-22. I read a few pages about the origin of the circular and unanswerable dilemma of two conflicting and dependent conditions.
Then I found a interesting poem by Jack Kerouac
DID I CREATE THE SKY?
DID I CREATE THE SKY? YES, FOR, IF IT WAS ANYTHING OTHER THAT A CONCEPTION IN MY MIND I WOULDN’T HAVE SAID “SKY — THAT IS WHY I AM THE GOLDEN ETERNITY.”
Look up or out and see what is there and take in the sight before the name of “sky” or “mountain” appears in your mind. Maybe try placing attention on your in breath prior to thinking the name of whatever you are seeing. What ever is there for that moment is there; undivided into a named segment. The mountain does not sit on the top of the earth. The river is not disconnected from the rain or the ocean.
Perhaps by naming I both create and limit all that I see to my past image of it without the awe and wonder of seeing for the first time.
